Here is what we are going to do

I am taking an image that I have as normal looking like this

and what I did was go to Image in PSP and then  I went  down to Negative Image and I got this look.

By doing this I was able to trace the outline on a new layer a little bit better if I did not want to use the grid form.  What I do is do the outside and then I take it off the Negative image and do the inside .  But remember you have to make sure you are on the outline layer and not on the negative layer.

So this is what it looks like the outline on the negative image

I moved the opacity down  on the negative layer  so you could se what it looks like.

and here is my finish outline ready to color and shade.

This is just another way to do an outline.
